Quick Vocab Quiz for the word influx
First, before you read the explanation, definition, and discussion of the word influx, try this quick vocab quiz:
Part of Speech: NOUN
Pronunciations: IPA: /ˈɪn.flʌks/ Glossary-style: [IHN-fluhks]
Definition: the act of flowing in. something or a group of things that entered or flowed in in large amounts or numbers (Ex: an influx of tourists).
Example: The so-called BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) have experienced an influx of investment in recent years as their economies have grown.
Discussion: influx is a word that comes to us with relatively little change from the Latin influxus and simply means the act of flowing in or the thing or things that have flowed in. flow, of course, means the movement of something as a current, like water.
So, we can talk about an influx of people when many people “flow in” at the same time, for example tourists during tourist season or immigrants during a wave of immigration. But we wouldn’t describe a single person entering a room as an influx.
